What private work can cover
A founder asks for a new logo before opening the checkout page. A writer reads another craft book before sending the manuscript. A consultant rebuilds the client portal while the proposal waits in drafts. Each activity may have value. That is why the pattern is difficult to see, including for the person doing the work.
Private work offers a controlled environment. The maker chooses the standard, sees the improvement, and can often finish the day's tasks without anyone else saying yes, no, or nothing at all. External exposure changes that relationship. A client can decline. A reader can disagree. A buyer can leave the page. That outside response changes what the maker knows about the work. Internal improvement and external feedback contribute different information.
Jim Winner's framework groups several mechanisms by the behavior that fills this gap. Research extension describes gathering information past the point at which it changes the decision. Decision recursion describes reopening a choice that had enough support already. Infrastructure substitution describes building the apparatus around a deliverable while the deliverable remains unexposed. Each describes a different activity occupying the interval before a consequential handoff.
There is research behind the concern that useful activity can hide delay. Westgate and colleagues studied productive procrastination, where a lower-priority adaptive task replaces a focal one. Pan and Etkin found that perceived productivity can lengthen procrastination. Winner's framework extends the question to work on the focal project itself and to portfolios with no clear focal project. The focus shifts from which task replaced another to what external result the sustained activity has produced.
Preparation serves the goal when it resolves what is needed for the intended handoff. Productive Stasis becomes visible when the same kinds of work keep returning while that handoff stays out of reach. Comparing the accumulated work with the events that reached a client, reader, buyer, or reviewer makes the recurring mismatch concrete.
